The M6 chip has landed — what it costs in South Africa right now

Good timing if you’ve been asking “should I wait for M6?” — because it’s no longer a rumour, and it’s already on sale here. Here’s exactly what’s landed in South Africa, what it costs in Rands, and what it means depending on which Mac you’re after.

What’s actually available in SA right now

Apple announced its new M6 chip on 25 August 2026, debuting in a refreshed Mac mini. It’s already up for pre-order locally through iStore, with stock shipping from 22 September 2026 — the same date as the rest of the world, so no long SA delay this time.

Here’s the South African pricing, in two tiers:

Mac mini (M6) — the entry chip:

  • 16GB / 256GB — R17,699
  • 16GB / 512GB — R21,699
  • 24GB / 512GB — R25,599

Mac mini (M5 Pro) — more RAM, storage and Thunderbolt speed:

  • 24GB / 512GB — R33,599

Worth knowing before you buy: this is a real price increase over the outgoing model — the previous M4 Mac mini launched locally at R13,199. So the entry-level Mac mini has jumped by roughly R4,500 this generation. That’s the honest number, not marketing spin.

Also worth knowing: the old M4 Mac mini has been fully discontinued by Apple, not kept around as a cheaper option. Any M4 Mac mini still listed locally is leftover retailer stock that won’t be restocked — could be a genuine clearance deal, but it’s also your last chance to grab one.

The same week, Apple also refreshed the Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips — not M6. We haven’t yet seen South African pricing for that update land with local retailers, so if you’re after a Studio, hold tight for local listings before comparing.

So where does that leave MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and iMac?

Still on M5 (or M4 for the iMac) for now, with no South African pricing or release date to speak of yet. Reporting from Apple supply-chain watchers points to the entry MacBook Pro and the iMac getting the plain M6 chip next, expected globally around October 2026 — so a matter of weeks away, not months. Nothing’s confirmed by Apple yet, and there’s no indication of South African timing or pricing for that update at this stage — we’ll cover it properly once real numbers exist locally.

Why no M6 Pro or M6 Max?

This part is now confirmed, not just rumour: M6 has no Pro, Max or Ultra variant at all. Apple is keeping M5 Pro, M5 Max and M5 Ultra as its high-end chips for a while longer, and is reportedly saving the bigger jump for an M7 Pro/Max generation in 2027. That’s why the new Mac mini pairs a fresh M6 with an existing M5 Pro option instead of a new M6 Pro.

Should you wait?

Buying a Mac mini right now? The new M6 mini is real, priced, and already up for pre-order locally — no need to wait, the numbers above are what you’ll actually pay. Just budget for that ~R4,500 price step-up over the old model. If you spot remaining M4 stock at a genuine discount, that’s still a solid buy, just know it’s the outgoing chip.

Buying a MacBook Air or MacBook Neo? No change here — carry on, these aren’t affected by any of this.

Buying a MacBook Pro (entry) or iMac? This is the one case where waiting a few weeks could pay off, since M6 versions of both are tipped for next month. There’s no South African pricing or date yet, so we can’t tell you exactly how long — but if you’re not in a rush, it’s worth checking back before you buy.

Buying a MacBook Pro with M5 Pro/Max, or a Mac Studio? You’re in a strong spot. With no M6 Pro/Max coming and M7 Pro/Max not expected until 2027, the M5 Pro/Max/Ultra chips you can buy today are set to remain Apple’s top tier for a good while yet — buying now isn’t a risk of being instantly outdated.

The quick version

  • The M6 chip has landed in South Africa in a refreshed Mac mini, up for pre-order now at iStore, shipping from 22 September 2026.
  • SA pricing: Mac mini M6 from R17,699 (16GB/256GB), up to R25,599 (24GB/512GB); Mac mini M5 Pro from R33,599 (24GB/512GB).
  • That’s a real price hike — the outgoing M4 Mac mini launched at R13,199.
  • The old M4 Mac mini is discontinued — any local stock left is clearance, not a parallel budget option.
  • Mac Studio was refreshed the same week with M5 Max/M5 Ultra, not M6 — SA pricing for that hasn’t landed with local retailers yet.
  • MacBook Pro (entry) and iMac are expected to get the M6 chip next, globally around October 2026 — no South African date or pricing yet, so check back before assuming a wait time.
  • There’s no M6 Pro/Max/Ultra at all — Apple’s keeping M5 Pro/Max/Ultra as the high-end chips until an M7 Pro/Max generation, expected in 2027.
  • MacBook Air and MacBook Neo buyers aren’t affected by any of this — no reason to wait.
